The Japanese term ukiyo – meaning ‘floating world’ – came to prominence in the 17th century to describe the culture of seeking pleasure in the urban lifestyle of cities such as Edo, Kyoto and Osaka. An artistic movement dedicated to themes such as transience, impermanence and the ephemeral emerged.
